KRAUS KBU14 vs KHU100-32: Bowl Space, Drain Position and Package

Shortlist the KRAUS KBU14 for its lower purchase price and broadly rounded bowl. Choose the KHU100-32 when the larger interior, tighter corners and included bottom grid matter enough to justify the higher quote. Both require a 36-inch minimum cabinet, and neither is a workstation sink. Their drain positions and countertop outlines differ, so neither should be ordered as an automatic replacement for the other.

The important detail in this comparison is the current KBU14 package. KRAUS’s specification revised March 27, 2025 lists 18-gauge steel and a strainer, template and mounting hardware. It does not list a bottom grid. Older KBU14 documents and reviews can describe a different gauge or accessory bundle. Confirm the selected package before paying.

What the dimensions actually buy you

Current published detail KBU14 KHU100-32
Outer width × front to back 31½ × 18⅜ in 32 × 19 in
Bowl width × front to back 29½ × 16¼ in 30 × 17 in
Bowl depth 9¼ in 10 in
Steel 18 gauge 16 gauge
Drain location Center-set Rear-center
Minimum cabinet 36 in wide; 24 in front to back 36 in wide; 24 in front to back
Bottom grid in checked package Not listed in current specification Included

The KHU’s published interior is ½ inch wider and ¾ inch larger front to back. That is a more useful comparison than rounding both sinks to “about 32 inches.” The KBU’s sweeping corners also change the space available to rectangular cookware. Measure the tray including its rolled lip and handles, then check its outline at the height where you intend to rest it. A bowl’s widest dimensions do not prove that a square tray sits flat at its bottom.

Likewise, the KBU14’s 10-inch overall height is not its 9¼-inch bowl depth. For the KHU, the current product description separates a 10-inch bowl from 10½-inch overall height; some older specification drawings use another overall figure. Give the installer the current drawing supplied for the actual unit. Do not calculate a disposal’s drain route from a short retail dimension field.

The drain location can outweigh the price difference

A center-set outlet puts the drain assembly in a different place from a rear-center outlet. Sketch the strainer or disposal, trap, shutoff valves and any pull-out storage before choosing. Moving the outlet on paper does not prove that an existing waste connection can remain or that a bin will fit.

If cabinet storage is the priority, use the rear-drain versus center-drain planning guide. For a deeper bowl with a disposal, separately check the sink bottom, disposal outlet and wall-drain heights. These are installation constraints, not small cosmetic differences.

Compare complete packages, not historical reviews

At our September 29 purchase check, the selected new KBU14 offer was lower priced than the selected new KHU100-32 offer. We keep live prices at the retailer because stock and discounts change. Add any separately needed grid and plumbing work to your comparison. Do not count an accessory as included because someone received it with an older order.

A grid can be useful for keeping cookware above the sink floor, but it adds a part to lift and clean. If you want one for KBU14, have KRAUS confirm the current compatible grid and drain-opening alignment before ordering it separately. Our bottom-grid measurement guide explains why nominal sink width is insufficient.

Which one suits the washing task?

  • KBU14: a good shortlist candidate for someone who wants a conventional rounded bowl, accepts the center drain and prefers the lower initial cost. Its smaller front-to-back interior and unlisted grid are the main compromises here.
  • KHU100-32: more relevant when tall cookware, a more rectangular interior and the supplied grid are useful. The deeper working position and higher complete cost deserve an actual reach and installation check.
  • Neither yet: the existing cutout, mounting access or drainage arrangement remains uncertain, or you actually need a sliding workstation ledge.

Thicker steel alone does not establish which sink is quieter, more scratch resistant or longer lived in your kitchen. We have not measured those outcomes. The decision here rests on documented geometry, included equipment and your complete installed quote.

Replacing a sink without replacing the counter

Have the fabricator compare the actual opening, corner curves, rim support and reveal with the proposed sink and its current template. A smaller outer dimension does not necessarily fit a larger old opening; there may be insufficient supporting rim. A wider sink may also lack a safe removal or installation path inside the existing cabinet. Use the existing-countertop replacement checklist before placing the order.
