Kitchen Faucet Spout Reach: Match the Outlet to Your Sink

Faucet spout reach is a horizontal measurement. It tells you where the outlet sits over the sink, not how tall a pot fits underneath or where the water must land. Check the outlet against your actual washing area before choosing a faucet by height or appearance.

A rear-drain sink makes the distinction especially useful: the drain and the middle of the washing area are different points. This guide uses the KRAUS KHU100-32 as a sink reference and a documented KPF-1610 faucet dimension as a calculation example. We have not installed or tested this pairing.

For example, the standalone KPF-1610 specification dated June 27, 2024 lists an 8⅝-inch reach, a 6¼-inch spout height and an 18¾-inch overall height. Using the overall height to decide whether a stockpot fits beneath the outlet would answer the wrong question. A pull-down head adds movement, but a hose should not have to be held out for every ordinary hand-washing task.

Map the docked outlet before moving any holes

  1. Draw a top view of the actual exposed bowl. Use the approved sink/reveal plan, not the sink’s outside rim dimensions.
  2. Mark the faucet mounting center and the back inside edge of the exposed bowl.
  3. Measure the horizontal setback from that bowl edge to the mounting center.
  4. Project the faucet’s documented reach toward the bowl. Mark the outlet separately from the drain.
  5. Try your usual plate, saucepan and hands in that working area. Include the spout’s permitted swivel and any workstation accessory movement.

A simple planning calculation: with the spout aimed straight forward, outlet projection into the bowl = spout reach − mounting-center setback. All measurements must share the same top-view reference.

Suppose a proposed mounting center is 2½ inches behind the exposed back edge. An 8⅝-inch reach puts the outlet’s plan-view projection 6⅛ inches forward of that edge: 8⅝ − 2½ = 6⅛. The 2½-inch setback is an illustrative input, not a drilling recommendation. Your fabricator must approve the actual position, material clearances and mounting access.

This calculation locates the outlet, not a guaranteed splash-free impact point. A tilted outlet, spray setting, water flow and the object being washed can change what happens below it. If reusing an installed faucet, observe the real stream and normal washing task before deciding that moving the sink is the remedy.

Should the stream point directly at the drain?

Do not make the drain center the only target. The KHU100-32 has a rear-center drain; centering the faucet laterally does not place the drain at the middle of its 30 × 17-inch bowl. Ask whether the docked stream reaches the area where you normally hold a dish without forcing you against a wall or the front rim.

There is no universal reach in this guide that fits every “32-inch sink.” The mounting setback, exposed opening and outlet direction can differ. Moving the faucet toward a preferred target may also conflict with its handle, backsplash or underside hardware. Use the countertop fixture-layout guide to resolve those constraints together.

Check the document version, not just the family name

KRAUS’s KPF-1610/FF-100 combination sheet dated December 2, 2021 lists an 8¾-inch reach and a 1½-inch maximum deck thickness. The standalone KPF-1610 sheet dated June 27, 2024 lists 8⅝ inches and 3⅜ inches respectively. These are different published documents; do not choose whichever limit makes your installation pass.

Record the full ordered package, its supplied drawing and revision. If the proposed mounting depends on the difference, obtain confirmation for the delivered faucet before cutting. A sink shopping link does not include or certify that faucet.

When the KHU100-32 belongs on the shortlist

Consider this conventional stainless undermount bowl when you want an open washing space and can coordinate its position with a suitable faucet. Its specified minimum cabinet is 36 inches wide and 24 inches front to back. Keep the cabinet-fit checks separate from the stream-position exercise.

If the existing faucet cannot reach the usable bowl comfortably, resolve that pairing first. Buying a deeper sink or a larger exterior size does not by itself correct a short reach.
