The KRAUS Fairlane KHT640-33 is worth considering for a single-bowl drop-in replacement if you have a suitable 36-inch minimum cabinet and a countertop opening that matches its template. The “33” describes the sink’s outside width. It is not a promise that the sink fits a 33-inch cabinet, or every opening left by another 33-inch sink.
The practical attraction is a broad stainless single bowl with a top-mounted rim, including for an appropriate laminate countertop installation. The important drawback is that replacement fit depends on several hidden measurements. Confirm them before removing a working sink or scheduling countertop work.
This is a document-based fit guide for the standard US KHT640-33, checked September 15, 2026. We have not installed it. It does not cover similarly named shallow-bowl variants or an undermount KHU model.

Exact-model measurements to bring to the installer
| Measurement | KHT640-33 specification |
|---|---|
| Outside rim | 33 × 22 in |
| Overall height | 9 in |
| Bowl | 30½ × 17 in |
| Bowl depth | 8⅝ in |
| Required minimum cabinet | 36 in left to right; 24 in front to back |
| Material and mount | 18-gauge stainless steel; top mount |
| Drain opening | 3½ in; offset location |
1. Match the opening, not the old sink’s label
Two sinks can both be marketed as 33 × 22 inches while requiring different openings. The new rim must cover the opening, the bowl must pass through it, and the clips must engage sound countertop material. Rounded corner shapes can prevent a fit even when the straight measurements look promising.
Before ordering, collect the old sink model if available, photographs from above and below, and the opening measurements that can be established without damaging the counter. Treat any measurement hidden under the old rim as uncertain until an installer can verify it. A countertop opening that is already too large is a different problem from one that can safely be enlarged.
Do not cut a 33 × 22-inch hole. Those are the outside rim dimensions. KRAUS’s installation instructions require checking the supplied template against the actual sink. The model-specific template and a dry fit determine the opening; this article deliberately does not substitute a generic cutout dimension.
For the broader installation choice, see undermount versus drop-in sinks. The KHT640-33 specification identifies this model as top mount; do not treat a generic product-family FAQ as authorization for a different installation.
2. Check the cabinet and the clips
The specified minimum cabinet is 36 inches wide and 24 inches front to back. That does not remove the need to inspect its interior. Rails, drawer boxes, a tip-out tray, plumbing and inaccessible corners can interfere with the bowl or mounting hardware.
Measure countertop thickness at the mounting area. The KHT-family installation manual says its standard top-mount hardware accommodates countertops up to 1½ inches thick. For more than 1½ inches and up to 2½ inches, it directs the buyer to KRAUS for suitable hardware. A thickened front edge is not necessarily the thickness at every clip, so show the installer the underside as well as the visible edge.
On an existing laminate counter, inspect for swelling or deteriorated material around the old opening. A new rim does not repair a damaged mounting surface. Get the installer’s assessment of whether the substrate can hold and seal correctly before purchasing.
3. Plan the faucet deck and under-sink assembly
The March 4, 2024 KHT640-33 specification drawing shows two 1⅜-inch deck holes. Match those positions to your faucet base, handle travel and any dispenser. Do not assume a three-hole faucet or an extra accessory will fit simply because this is a drop-in sink. Confirm the delivered sink before finalizing a faucet order.
This is one place where model documents matter: the reviewed product page contained inconsistent generic wording about hole count, gauge and installation. We use the labeled KHT640-33 drawing and its 18-gauge top-mount specification, rather than combining claims from adjacent variants.
The 8⅝-inch bowl depth is also different from the 9-inch outside height. Neither includes the full plumbing assembly below the sink. Measure where the actual drain or disposal will sit relative to the wall drain, and leave service access. The offset drain may change the plumbing route compared with your old double bowl. Our disposal-clearance guide helps organize that check.
Who should buy it—and who should pause
Consider it when you want one broad bowl, need a top-mount installation and have confirmed the opening, cabinet, faucet and hardware fit. The listed package includes a bottom grid and strainer, so compare complete packages when checking alternatives.
Pause if your cabinet is only 33 inches, the old opening is unmeasured, you need a different deck-hole layout, or the counter is damaged. If you require two separate water basins, replacing a double bowl with one large bowl also changes daily use; read single versus double bowl tradeoffs first.

Source and scope notes
Primary documents: KRAUS KHT640-33 specification sheet, revision March 4, 2024; KHT-series installation manual (KHT-Fortune-IM); US product page and Amazon variant B0D9MX1G18, reviewed September 15, 2026. Dimensions are manufacturer specifications, not our measurements. We have not established a long-term failure rate or tested drainage, scratch resistance or sound levels.
If you are also considering a white composite sink, check the KGD-54WHITE drop-in and undermount fit requirements. Its 33-inch width does not make the opening interchangeable with the KHT640-33; the rim, height, faucet holes and installation templates differ.
