The KRAUS KBU44 is worth considering if you want a conventional rounded single bowl with a protective bottom grid included. Its matching grid is the KBG-44. Do not order a replacement by the sink’s advertised “32-inch” size—or by the larger dimensions measured across the top of the bowl. The curved, sloping walls leave a smaller area where a grid actually sits.
The other buying trap is below the bowl: a sink kit that includes a drain strainer does not include a garbage disposal or settle the disposal’s mounting and cabinet-clearance requirements. Plan those as a separate assembly.

The three measurements that should not be interchanged
| Part | Documented size | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| KBU44 outside | 32 3/8 × 18 1/2 inches; 9 inches overall height | Initial cabinet and countertop planning, followed by the actual template |
| Bowl | 30 3/8 × 16 5/8 inches; 8 5/8 inches deep | Understanding washing space; not ordering a grid by the top opening alone |
| KBG-44 grid | 27 1/8 × 13 7/8 × 7/8 inches | Identifying the model-specific bottom accessory |
KRAUS names KBG-44 as the matching grid in the KBU44 installation manual and explicitly lists KBU44 in the grid specification. That manufacturer pairing is stronger evidence than a retailer’s “fits 32-inch sinks” description.
The bowl’s listed length exceeds the grid’s length by 3 1/4 inches; the listed width exceeds it by 2 3/4 inches. Those are arithmetic differences between two published dimensions, not measured gaps around an installed grid. Wall slope, corner curves and the height at which the grid rests all affect the actual clearance.
What the current sink package includes
The selected KBU44 listing and KRAUS product information include the stainless steel sink, protective stainless steel grid and a drain assembly with removable strainer. The manufacturer also provides mounting hardware and a cut-out template. Check the delivered carton against its packing list before the countertop work begins.
A grid lifts dishes away from the sink surface, but it adds another item to clean. Food can collect beneath it or around its feet. If you prefer an empty basin that you can wipe in one pass, treat the included grid as an optional daily-use accessory, rather than a reason to keep it in place all the time.
The KBU44 is an 18-gauge undermount sink with a 36-inch minimum cabinet requirement. The kit does not turn a narrower cabinet into a suitable installation. For the cabinet decision, use our cabinet and sink measurement guide.
How to check a replacement grid without buying twice
- Confirm the sink model. Use your receipt, carton or product identification. A familiar rounded shape is not enough to distinguish nearby KRAUS models.
- Start with the named accessory. KBG-44 is the documented match. Check the complete part number, including any replacement-package details.
- Compare the footprint and drain access. The replacement must sit correctly at the bottom, preserve access to the drain and avoid riding up the curved walls.
- Inspect feet and bumpers. A bare metal corner touching the bowl defeats part of the protective purpose. Do not bend an incorrect grid to force it into place.
- Check return conditions before installing. If a third-party grid claims compatibility but omits corner geometry or the drain opening location, those are unresolved fit questions.
For an unlabelled sink, follow the bottom-grid measurement method. Measure at the level where the feet will stand, rather than treating the widest upper opening as a rectangular floor.
Strainer drain or garbage disposal: settle this before plumbing
The KBU44 manual identifies a 3 1/2-inch drain opening and names the ST-1 drain. That tells you about the sink opening and supplied drain path. It does not certify every disposal flange, mounting assembly or waste-pipe arrangement.
With a conventional waste connection, the supplied strainer assembly is part of the plan. With a disposal, have the installer specify the disposal’s compatible flange and mount, the space needed for its body, and the route to the wall drain. Do not stack a complete basket-strainer assembly on top of a disposal mount as if every supplied part must be used.
In the cabinet, consider the disposal body and outlet as well as the sink’s 9-inch exterior height. A rear-positioned drain may change where that equipment sits, but it does not guarantee room for an existing pull-out bin or filter. Our sink depth and disposal clearance checklist explains the measurements to collect.
Who should choose this kit?
Consider it for a compatible 36-inch-or-larger cabinet project where you want one rounded bowl, a named replacement grid and an ordinary strainer option. The benefit is a clear accessory match, not a claim that this is the quietest or toughest sink.
Choose a different design if your main priority is a ledge-supported cutting board and prep accessories: the KBU44 is not a workstation sink. If a deep basin or cabinet equipment is already causing a reach or clearance problem, settle that before choosing by gauge or included accessories.

Research scope
Reviewed September 21, 2026: KRAUS KBU44 installation manual and product specifications, KBG-44 bottom-grid specification, and the selected US KBU44 retail package. We compared published dimensions and component identities; we did not install the sink, measure a physical grid or test a disposal. The diagram explains the fit logic and is not a cutting template.
Still choosing the sink itself? Compare the KBU44 with the KHU100-32 before ordering accessories. Their bowl shape, depth and cutout requirements differ, even though both are sold in the 32-inch class.
If you are replacing the non-disposal drain separately, use the basket-strainer opening, flange and sink-thickness check to distinguish a full assembly from a replacement lift-out basket.
