Which Side Gets the Disposal in a Double-Bowl Sink?

There is no universal left or right side for a garbage disposal in a double-bowl sink. First choose the bowl that best serves your food-preparation routine, then check whether the disposal and plumbing can actually fit beneath it. If only one side passes the installation check, that constraint can override your preferred workflow.

Use the labels “food-prep bowl” and “rinse bowl” before assigning left and right. Handedness, the dishwasher’s location or the larger bowl can suggest a preference, but none proves the answer by itself.

Two double-bowl workflow layouts: left disposal with right rinse bowl, or left rinse bowl with right disposal; check clearances under the chosen side

Try the routine before choosing a drain

Stand where you normally prepare food. Identify where a cutting board, scraps container and dishes will be. Walk an ordinary task from preparation to cleanup without operating any appliance: where would you rinse a board, empty a plate and keep a separate bowl available?

For example, if the right bowl is the natural place to rinse food-prep items while the left holds wash water, a right-side disposal may support that routine. If the left bowl receives most of that work and the right stays available for clean items, the opposite arrangement may make more sense. These are planning scenarios, not findings from a kitchen we tested.

Scrape suitable waste into your normal bin or compost system as appropriate; choosing a disposal bowl does not make every kind of food waste suitable for a disposer. Follow the exact appliance’s operating guidance.

Why “always use the small bowl” is incomplete

A small auxiliary bowl can be a convenient food-prep station, but it may be the wrong place if you constantly carry messy dishes across the other bowl to reach it. Equally, putting the disposal in the larger bowl may interrupt a wash-water routine you wanted the double sink to provide.

For a 50/50 sink, bowl size gives no tie-breaker. Our single-bowl versus double-bowl guide addresses the broader layout choice. Here the narrower question is which drain should serve the task once you have decided on two bowls.

Check the complete space below both bowls

Ask the installer to compare two actual layouts using the selected disposal’s drawing and the sink’s drain positions. Include the appliance body, mounting assembly, discharge connection, trap route, wall connection, service access and any nearby storage or equipment.

  • Depth: a bowl that clears the cabinet can still put the disposal outlet in an unsuitable position for the proposed drain route.
  • Width: account for the disposal body and connections, not only the circular drain opening.
  • Access: leave a workable route for installation and future service.
  • Other connections: resolve any dishwasher drain arrangement using the appliance instructions and applicable local requirements.

This is a comparison brief for the installer, not a universal plumbing layout. The side nearest the dishwasher is not automatically required, and “36-inch cabinet” does not prove that every combination of disposal, filter and storage bin will fit.

One disposal opening, one ordinary strainer

On the bowl receiving the disposal, use the disposal’s approved mounting flange and hardware for the sink material and thickness. The other bowl can use its compatible basket strainer. Do not stack the disposal onto a complete ordinary strainer assembly.

Our basket strainer and flange fit guide explains the separate measurements. Check each opening independently; the fact that two drains look identical from above does not certify the hardware beneath them.

A current 50/50 sink example

The KRAUS Quarza KGD-433BWHITE is a 33 × 22-inch white granite-composite double bowl with a specified 36-inch minimum cabinet. It is a candidate if two similarly sized working areas suit your routine and the complete installation fits. The listed drain assemblies are not a garbage disposal.

Make the decision in this order

  1. Assign a job to each bowl and sketch your preferred left/right arrangement.
  2. Have both under-sink layouts checked with the exact sink and disposal drawings.
  3. If both fit, select the more convenient workflow. If one fails, reassess the arrangement before buying.
  4. Record the chosen disposal flange, ordinary strainer and installation plan together.
