For a butcher block countertop, choose the sink together with an approved plan for sealing the cutout. A drop-in rim covers the edge but does not make unfinished wood waterproof. An undermount leaves that edge exposed beside the bowl, so its finish, support and maintenance requirements deserve attention before the counter is cut.
If you cannot get the countertop supplier and installer to confirm an undermount detail for your actual wood top, investigate a compatible drop-in installation first. This is a planning preference, not a claim that any drop-in sink automatically protects wood.

The hidden edge matters as much as the visible surface
Waterlox’s end-grain guidance identifies sink and faucet cutouts as areas where absorbent wood fibers are exposed. Water that gets beneath a covering rim may remain hidden. A neat-looking bead at the top therefore does not prove the cut edge underneath was finished correctly.
Ask the installer to identify four areas on a sketch: the countertop surface, the vertical cut edge, the underside immediately around the opening, and the faucet or accessory holes. Keep the sketch with the finish product name and installation instructions. This turns “we will seal it” into a checkable scope.
Drop-in and undermount need different decisions
- Drop-in: confirm rim coverage, the specified rim seal and mounting-clamp reach through the real counter thickness. Arrange to finish the cut edge before the rim hides it.
- Undermount: obtain approval for the exposed wood edge, the chosen finish and the complete support system. The seal between bowl and counter is not a substitute for structural support.
- Either style: decide how the joint will be inspected and maintained without relying on water staying away from the sink forever.
Our general mounting-style guide explains the visible joint and replacement tradeoffs. The extra decision here is how this particular wood countertop will tolerate the wet area.
Agree on the finish-and-caulk sequence
Follow the actual finish system rather than combining instructions from unrelated products. As a specific example, Waterlox says to complete the countertop finish and wait 5–7 days for curing before applying silicone caulk; its finish does not adhere to silicone already on the surface. That interval is not a universal rule for all wood finishes.
Schedule cutting, edge preparation, finishing, curing and sink installation in that order only where the selected manufacturers’ instructions support it. A rushed installation quote that allows no finish-curing time deserves clarification. Ask who will protect freshly cut faucet holes if those are drilled later.
A drop-in candidate after the countertop plan is settled
The Elkay Dayton D125223 is a 25 × 22-inch, 22-gauge stainless drop-in sink with three faucet holes and a stated 30-inch minimum cabinet. Consider this simple, shallow-bowl option when its dimensions and mounting hardware suit the approved project. It is not an undermount model, and its product listing alone does not approve your wood top.
Check Elkay D125223 — 25 × 22, three holes
Use our D125223 fit guide for the separate cutout, bowl and faucet checks. Do not copy a nominal 25 × 22-inch measurement onto the counter as a cutting template.
Questions to resolve before placing the order
- Does the countertop supplier approve the selected mounting style and retain any applicable warranty for that installation?
- Which exact finish protects each newly cut surface, and when can the sink sealant be applied?
- Will clips or supports fit the actual thickness without an improvised fastening arrangement?
- How will the homeowner inspect the joint and recognize when maintenance is needed?
If wood is already darkened, swollen or soft near the opening, have its condition assessed before covering it with a new rim. A replacement sink should not conceal unresolved moisture damage.
