A 2-inch bar-sink drain opening is too small for a disposal flange that requires a 3½-inch opening. Choosing a lower-horsepower or shorter disposal does not resolve that mounting mismatch. Check the opening requirement before spending time on cabinet clearance.
This matters when an inexpensive compact sink looks ideal for a beverage counter that may also become a food-preparation area. The sink’s outside size and the hole in the bottom of its bowl are separate specifications.

Three measurements that are easy to confuse
- Sink drain opening: the hole through the bowl where the drain assembly mounts.
- Visible drain flange: the rim resting on the bowl; its outside diameter is not the hole diameter.
- Pipe connection: the outlet below the drain assembly; this does not establish disposal mounting compatibility.
Read the sink specification for the first measurement and the exact disposal installation drawing for its required opening. Measuring only the visible drain rim, or finding a pipe adapter with the right outlet size, does not complete that comparison.
Elkay D115151 is a useful buying example
The Elkay Dayton D115151 is a 15 × 15-inch single-bowl drop-in bar sink with a 2-inch drain opening. That makes it a candidate for a compact bar layout where the selected small drain assembly and ordinary waste line meet the intended use. It should not be purchased on the assumption that a typical 3½-inch disposal mount will fit.

The link selects the sink, not a disposal or a complete plumbing kit. Consider it for a project whose drain plan has been checked. If disposing of food scraps at this particular bowl is essential, settle that requirement before buying the sink.
Why a compact disposal is not the first answer
“Compact” usually addresses space occupied beneath the bowl; it does not by itself specify a smaller mounting opening. As one documented example, Ruvati’s RVA1041GG disposal flange specifies a standard 3½-inch drain opening. That specification does not approve a 2-inch sink.
Ask for a complete, manufacturer-supported combination: sink model, disposal model, mounting flange and any required accessory. An adapter advertised only by pipe size is not evidence that it supports the appliance at the sink. We have not verified a disposal mounting assembly approved for the D115151’s 2-inch opening.
Choose the sink around the job
Write down what actually happens at this counter. Rinsing glasses and filling a pitcher is a different requirement from preparing vegetables and clearing plates. If scraps can be collected separately and handled at another suitable location, a disposal at the bar may be unnecessary.
If the bar must handle food preparation independently, compare sinks with a documented opening suitable for your chosen disposal. A larger opening is only the first gate: bowl thickness, flange reach, mounting instructions and the space below must still agree.
For comparison, our D117193 bar-sink guide describes a different model with a 3½-inch opening. That is an opening-size alternative, not certification of every disposal pairing. Its overall footprint is also different; do not assume it drops into the same cutout.
Do not plan around enlarging the hole
A sink opening is part of a formed bowl with a particular sealing surface and surrounding geometry. Do not treat cutting a larger circle as a verified conversion. Obtain written model-specific approval before considering a modification; otherwise choose a compatible sink while the purchase is still reversible.
Once the mounting combination is confirmed, use the disposal-clearance guide to check the appliance body, outlet route and service access. Keep a sketch with the actual part numbers so the installer can evaluate the complete assembly.
