Kitchen Sink Soap Dispenser Hole Size & Deck Thickness Guide

There is no single hole size or deck-thickness limit for every kitchen sink soap dispenser. The Moen 3942 specification calls for a 1⅛-inch hole and allows a 2¼-inch maximum deck. KRAUS KSD-43 specifies a 1¼-inch minimum hole and a 2½-inch maximum deck. Those are model-specific limits, not permission to drill or enlarge an opening without checking the exact fitting and sink or countertop requirements.

If your current dispenser works and is comfortable to use, keep it. For a failed pump, check the correct replacement pump before replacing the whole fitting. For a new unit, use the measurements below to rule out a poor fit before comparing finishes.

For a new or replacement built-in dispenser, measure four things: the existing hole, the total thickness being clamped, the bottle’s service space and where the nozzle will dispense. A top-refill label solves only the routine filling step; it does not make everything under the counter irrelevant.

Fill in these four checks before shopping

Copy the four lines below into a note, or print this page. Use one set for each candidate. Measure the actual installation, and ask the fabricator or installer to verify anything hidden or uncertain.

  1. Existing hole: diameter ______; surface material ______; current fitting model ______. Check the exposed opening rather than the decorative cap’s outside diameter.
  2. Total clamped thickness: ______. Include the actual layers between the top seating surface and the mounting nut, including a backing layer when present. Photograph an underside obstruction or uneven surface.
  3. Bottle and service space: clear width ______; space below the mounting point ______; bottle removal route ______. Confirm access to the nut and clearance from the sink bowl, supports, filter cartridges and moving faucet hose.
  4. Dispensing position: distance from hole center to intended receiving area ______. Can your hand or sponge fit under the nozzle and press the pump without colliding with the faucet or backsplash? ______.

A wide base can hide a hole without proving the mounting is approved. Conversely, a narrow shank drawn in a specification is not necessarily the recommended hole size. Use the manufacturer’s installation-hole statement; do not infer a drilling diameter from a picture.

Specification Moen 3942SRS KRAUS KSD-43SS
Documented installation opening One 1⅛-inch-diameter hole Minimum 1¼-inch hole
Maximum deck thickness 2¼ inches 2½ inches
Spout reach 2¾ inches 3¼ inches
Spout height 3⅛ inches 3⅛ inches
Bottle capacity / routine refill 18 oz / from above 17 oz / from above
Bottle width in drawing 2 11/16 inches 2⅝ inches
Finish discussed here Spot Resist Stainless (SRS) Stainless Steel (SS, not SFS)

Dimensions come from the manufacturer’s published Moen 3942 series specification (6/15), Moen’s current product information and KRAUS KSD-43 specification (September 15, 2022). They are model-specific screening values, not universal rules. Neither table entry establishes the maximum acceptable hole in a different existing countertop; obtain that approval where needed.

The KRAUS drawing also labels a roughly one-inch shank. Its separate installation requirement is a minimum 1¼-inch hole. Confusing those two dimensions could lead to an expensive error. The bottle widths above likewise exclude the extra space your hand and installation tools may need.

Use the numbers to rule candidates out

Your existing opening is 1⅛ inches

Moen’s documented hole size matches that measurement. The KSD-43’s published minimum is larger. That makes the Moen worth checking against the remaining three worksheet items; it does not authorize enlarging the hole for the KRAUS. On stone or another fabricated top, let the fabricator decide whether any alteration is practical.

The mounting stack is 2⅜ inches thick

This illustrative measurement exceeds Moen 3942’s 2¼-inch maximum and falls within KSD-43’s 2½-inch maximum. The KRAUS therefore remains a candidate only if its hole, seating surface and service space also work. Do not omit required mounting parts to squeeze an over-thick deck into a shorter fitting.

The nozzle needs to reach farther forward

KSD-43 has a documented reach half an inch greater than Moen 3942. Mark the hole center and both reaches on a top-view sketch, then check where your hand or sponge actually sits. More reach can help one layout but crowd a nearby faucet in another. Reach does not include a guarantee about where every drop lands.

If the sink and faucet are also changing, combine this worksheet with the full undermount sink and faucet-hole layout review. Final hole placement requires the whole assembly, including the path of a pull-down hose.

Top-refill bottle or a tube into a larger soap container?

Both models in the table use a bottle that refills from above. This is a simple arrangement for someone who wants to stop crawling under the sink for routine refills. You still need access underneath for installation, a bottle replacement or servicing the mount.

An extension-tube kit moves the soap supply to a larger container below the counter. It can reduce how often that container is changed, but introduces a tube route, connections and another compatibility check. The kit must suit the pump, soap and container, and the bottle must remain accessible without interfering with a faucet weight or pull-out bin.

We have not verified a particular extension kit for these two pumps, so we do not treat a “fits most dispensers” claim as approval. If the supplied top-fill bottle is already convenient, keep it. If you need a bulk-container arrangement, obtain an explicitly compatible kit or dispenser system and follow its own priming and maintenance instructions.

Follow the pump maker’s guidance for the liquid used. Do not invent a soap-dilution ratio to cure poor pumping. Check the correct refill level and model-specific troubleshooting before replacing a working mounting assembly.

Which one should you consider?

Moen 3942SRS: a candidate when the 1⅛-inch installation opening, deck limit and shorter reach fit your existing layout, and you want the Spot Resist Stainless finish. The tradeoff is its lower published deck-thickness allowance compared with the KSD-43. Its 18 oz bottle alone is not a reason to choose it over a better-fitting pump.

KRAUS KSD-43SS: a candidate when the larger minimum opening, 2½-inch deck allowance and 3¼-inch reach suit the layout. The tradeoff is that an existing smaller hole may rule it out. The linked SS finish is ordinary Stainless Steel; do not assume it is the separate Spot Free Stainless Steel variant.

Keep the counter unchanged if neither passes the worksheet. A countertop soap bottle is a useful option while you establish a suitable replacement, and may remain the simpler permanent choice when there is no good hole or service space.

The dispenser fitting and the sink itself have separate fastening limits. If a thick countertop also prevents a compatible Elkay top-mount sink from clamping securely, use our Elkay LK363 versus LK463 clip-kit guide to check the underside channel and clamped thickness. A dispenser extension or longer sink screw is not a universal fix for both jobs.
