Food residue around the splash baffle is worth checking before replacing a working disposal. First confirm whether your exact baffle is removable; do not pull a fixed assembly out. Start with accessible food residue and the splash baffle, then reassess. Buying a new motor before locating the odor may leave the underlying problem untouched.
Check what you are actually smelling
Note whether the smell appears at the disposal opening, another drain, or elsewhere in the cabinet. Look for visible leakage without touching electrical parts. A smell that accompanies poor drainage, a leak, or a non-running unit needs more than deodorizing. Keep those symptoms in your notes rather than assuming they all have one cause.
Is your baffle designed to lift out?
Identify the model and its care instructions before pulling on the rubber splash guard. Some baffles are removable for cleaning; others are not designed to lift out in the same way. InSinkErator sells a Badger Baffle Upgrade Kit, model 78529-ISE, specifically to provide a removable baffle. That is a reason to verify the existing assembly, not evidence that every Badger already has a removable part.
Do not order an accessory from a photo alone. Check the model, existing mounting arrangement and manufacturer compatibility information. An upgrade kit and a loose replacement rubber part are not automatically interchangeable.
A useful cleaning sequence
Switch off and disconnect power first, following the unit’s instructions. Never reach a hand into the grinding chamber. Inspect only the areas you can safely access. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning method for the underside of the baffle and the upper opening, where retained food can be missed when only the visible sink surface is wiped.
If the baffle is genuinely removable, follow its removal and cleaning instructions and put it back before operating the disposal. If it is fixed or you cannot identify it, do not force it out. Consult the correct care guide or service support for safe access.
Change the habit that leaves residue behind
InSinkErator’s use guidance calls for cold water during grinding and continued water flow briefly afterward. Avoid pouring fats, oils and grease into the disposal. These are operating practices, not a promise that any odor will disappear after one rinse.
Fragrance can make it harder to judge whether cleaning worked. Compare the same opening under similar conditions after the next ordinary use. If a smell returns quickly, record when it happens and whether water drains normally. A persistent drain or plumbing problem should not be treated as a reason to buy progressively stronger scented products.
Compatibility check before ordering: match the disposal model, the installed baffle assembly and the accessory manufacturer’s fit statement. An Evolution replacement collar and a Badger upgrade assembly solve different fit questions; similar-looking rubber does not prove interchangeability.
What to buy—and when to buy nothing
| Finding | Next decision |
|---|---|
| Accessible residue, normal operation | Follow model-specific cleaning first. |
| Damaged baffle | Verify the exact replacement assembly and compatibility. |
| Odor plus leak or poor drainage | Investigate the additional symptom before buying an accessory. |
| Cleaned opening, recurring unexplained smell | Document recurrence for qualified plumbing or appliance support. |
Save the evidence before replacing anything
Model: ____; baffle removable according to manual: yes/no/unknown; odor location: ____; visible residue: ____; drainage normal: ____; leak present: ____; cleaning date/method: ____; recurrence: ____. A replacement is easier to assess when these observations are clear.
Purchase check after the diagnosis
A smell by itself is not a reason to replace a working unit. If a qualified diagnosis identifies a failed disposal and the Badger 5 fits the existing power, mount and drain layout, use the existing site destination below to check the current package and availability.
