Low-Profile Garbage Disposals for Deep Sinks: Fit Checks

Modern Sink Lab researches manufacturer documents and product listings; this is not a hands-on product test. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Specifications and purchase destinations checked September 29, 2026.

A low-profile or compact garbage disposal fits a deep sink only if its installed waste outlet and trap can connect correctly to the wall drain. A shorter housing may free cabinet space while leaving the outlet too low. Choose by the installed outlet position first, then check the housing, discharge tube and service space. A small motor housing alone does not solve a high wall drain.

Two familiar, currently available candidates are the InSinkErator Badger 5 with power cord and Moen GXP50C. The Badger 5 product specifications list an 11½-inch overall height; the GXP50C drawing lists 13⅜ inches. The Moen has the narrower published horizontal dimension. Use those figures to screen cabinet space, then check each drawing’s waste-outlet reference against the actual sink and wall drain. Neither is an automatic fit. Their drawings also use different reference points, so do not turn the table into a simple “this one gains 7/8 inch” calculation.

Start with the dimension that could stop the installation

  • Wall drain already near the proposed outlet: pause the purchase and have the full trap route checked. Changing the disposal may not provide enough usable height.
  • Motor would hit a shelf or cabinet floor: compare the entire mounted assembly and the space needed to remove it, not just the product listing’s bounding box.
  • Filter tank or pullout bin beside the disposal: compare body width, rotating outlet position and plumbing envelope. A narrower cylinder can still need a wide elbow route.

For the measuring procedure, use our sink-depth and disposal-clearance guide. This article adds model-specific drawing checks rather than replacing those room measurements.

Badger 5 and GXP50C: what the documents actually show

Exact model Published height / horizontal size Waste outlet reference Main buying limitation
InSinkErator Badger 5, with power cord Overall height 11½ in on the current U.S. product page; installation drawing A = 11½ in and B = 6 5/16 in. Drawing shows a 6 in drop to the discharge centerline from the sink-side reference. Read the actual sink/mount notes. Do not substitute Badger 5XP dimensions or assume a reused mount puts the new outlet in the same place.
Moen GXP50C, with power cord 13⅜ in overall height and 5⅜ in horizontal span in its specification drawing. 6⅞ in from the top flange reference to the waste outlet centerline. The 4¼ in dimension points to the smaller dishwasher inlet. The standard assembly lists a ½ in maximum sink thickness. A thick drain seat needs a separately confirmed mounting solution.

Read the arrows, not just the numbers. The top of a flange, the underside of a sink and the bottom of a mounting ring are different starting points. A Badger specification sheet also includes a stainless-sink adjustment to the stated outlet drop. Confirm the drawing and mount supplied with the exact unit before planning a close-tolerance replacement. The table is a shortlist, not an installed-height guarantee.

Which one is worth checking for your cabinet?

Badger 5: a candidate when vertical body space is tight

Start here if a Badger-style unit is already installed and you can compare the existing mounting and discharge arrangement with the new unit’s instructions. Its published 11½-inch overall height makes it relevant to a short vertical space, but the elbow and trap still need room. The specific shopping link below is the ½ HP Badger 5 with power cord; other listings may omit the cord or name a different Badger model.

The important downside is that buying a shorter housing cannot raise a sink that has already moved the drain outlet down. If the new bowl is deeper, remeasure even when the brand and mount look familiar. Check the exact Badger 5 with power cord on Amazon.

Moen GXP50C: a candidate when side-to-side space matters

The GXP50C drawing provides a useful narrow horizontal dimension to compare with a filter, supply line or bin beside the drain. It includes a power cord. Check the complete installation envelope because the outlet elbow, hose connection and mounting hardware occupy space beyond a simple body outline.

Its tradeoff is the taller published height and the separate ½-inch sink-thickness limit. Also, retailer “product dimensions” differ from Moen’s installation drawing; do not use the retailer’s box of dimensions to decide outlet height. The page may suggest a newer model, but these measurements apply only to GXP50C. Check the exact Moen GXP50C on Amazon.

Turn the shortlist into a decision

  1. Fix one room reference. Record the proposed installed waste-outlet center and the wall-drain center from the same floor or other permanent datum. Do not mix a cabinet-floor measurement with a finished-floor measurement.
  2. Trace the whole drain route. Include the supplied discharge tube, trap, wall connection and any second bowl. The plumber needs the actual geometry, not just a positive difference between two heights.
  3. Check the occupied volume. Include shutoff access, electrical connection, dishwasher hose and space to release the disposal from its mount. Leave the service clearance required by the exact instructions; no universal allowance is assumed here.
  4. Confirm the mount and drain-seat thickness. A 3½-inch drain opening does not prove that a standard flange can clamp a thick sink. Use the extended-disposal-flange guide for that separate check.

If the route would put standing water in the disposal, or needs an uphill connection, stop treating the job as a product swap. A shallower sink, a professionally revised drain location or a non-disposal drain may be the better plan. That choice should be made before the countertop or sink installation is committed.

Keep or reject the whole combination

Write “Pending: installed outlet height unknown” instead of “Fits: compact.” Our sink-and-disposal comparison matrix and printable three-candidate sheet lets you record a sink, disposal, blocking measurement and reason for each candidate. It is especially useful when a deeper workstation sink is competing with a shallower conventional bowl.

How this comparison was checked

We first reviewed Amazon U.S. Garbage Disposals Best Sellers, where the two exact listings appeared during our September 29 snapshot. Rank is not a quality score or a sales-volume estimate. Fit details come from the current U.S. Badger 5 product page, the InSinkErator installation manual supplied on the verified listing, and Moen’s GXP50C specification drawing, Rev. 3/21. We have not measured these units in a test cabinet or compared grinding noise and durability.
